Spring is a wonderful time to visit the historic towns and villages of South Lanarkshire. Our lovely little home town of Strathaven is a great starting point for those looking to explore the area whilst the days get milder and longer. Here’s just some of the things to do in Spring in South Lanarkshire.
Get outdoors and explore Craignethan Castle
A little bit more off the beaten track than our own Strathaven Castle, Craignethan Castle opens to the public in April through to September. There’s lots to explore within these 16th century ruins and, during quieter Spring months, you are often lucky enough to get the place to yourself. Highlights of the castles original features include the well & the caponier, alongside winding staircases and steep stairs that you should wear stable shoes for. On finer Spring days, why not make an afternoon of it and walk to Craignethan Castle ruins via the gorge trail from the Clyde Valley.
Take to the skies at Strathaven Airfield
Ever dreamed of flying your own aircraft? Strathaven Airfield, with its traditional grass runway, allows you to do just that with a one-day pilot experience. The day out includes a 30-minute one-to-one lesson with a UK Civil Aviation Authority licensed instructor and allows photo opportunities for friends and family, ensuring you never forget the one-in-a-lifetime adventure. To add to the experience, why not make a weekend of it and take advantage of Strathaven Hotel’s Flying Experience Package – combining your lesson with an overnight stay, dinner and breakfast.
Breakfast with the Easter Bunny at Chatelherault Country Park
This old 1700’s Hunting Lodge was restored and opened its door to the public for visits in the late 1970s – with the addition of an exhibition gallery, café, visitor centre and open gardens. The Chatelherault Country Park is impressive enough by itself, with delightful 18th century gardens boasting plants that were grown for their use in medicine, beauty, fragrance and cooking. However, as an additional Spring bonus, the attraction will be offering Breakfast with the Easter Bunny events from the 31st March.
Celebrate Spring at the Krishna Eco Farm
Looking for a place to bring in the new equinox? Perhaps the Spring celebrations of the Hindu Holi festival take your fancy? Maybe you just like the sound of reconnecting with nature and your spiritual self? Even is the idea of the Hare Krishna movement leaves you a little unsure, the Krishna Eco Farm might be worth a visit – simply because it might possibly be one of Scotland’s best kept secrets! Just 7 miles from Strathaven, this little venue offers everything from Indian cultural tours, environmental talks, meditation events and henna festivals. Guests are welcome for day trips and day-to-day volunteering programmes.
